The Mathematical Reason Most People Never "Make It"
The square root of the people in a domain produce half its output — and you cannot know in advance which root you are.
The one idea
Productivity is not evenly distributed and never has been. Price’s Law states that the square root of the number of contributors in a domain produces half of its output — 10 of 100 employees, 100 of 10,000 scientists, roughly 3,300 of Spotify’s 11 million artists. The distribution isn’t a market failure or an injustice to be corrected; it’s what compounding systems produce by default.
The collision this creates is the article’s point: it contradicts the widely held belief that effort converts to outcome at a stable rate, and that consistency is an equalizer. In a complex system, consistency gets you into the sample. It does not distribute the output.
The engine
Three applications, all following from the same shape.
Output. If √n of your posts drive half your results, then 100 published pieces contain roughly 10 that matter and 90 that were practice. The corollary is operational: publish volume to find the winners, then double down ruthlessly on what worked.
Skills. Of the dozens of skills you have, √n of them drive half your market value. The article’s argument against being well-rounded follows directly — the education system and corporate ladder sell balanced competence, but balance spreads you across the slots that don’t pay. Better to reach the top 1% in two or three multiplier skills than to shore up weaknesses.
Time. Of a 40-hour week, roughly six hours are doing the work that matters. Everything else is maintenance that feels like work.
Then the closing move, which is the genuinely useful part: the paradox of discovery. You cannot identify the 10 posts without publishing 100, or the multiplier skills without trying a dozen. The disproportion isn’t an argument for doing less — it’s an argument for doing a lot in order to find out, and then having the discipline to concentrate once you know.
My take
The paradox-of-discovery section is what saves this from being a fatalistic piece of arithmetic. The naive reading of Price’s Law is discouraging — most people are in the 90% by construction. The useful reading is that membership in the root is partly determined after the fact, by whether you generated enough attempts to have a winner in the sample and then noticed it.
The second application is the one I’d actually act on. “Get to the top 1% in a specific combination rather than well-rounded” is Munger’s circle of competence and Naval’s specific knowledge arriving from a third direction, and three independent routes to the same conclusion is worth more than any of them alone.
Where it gets thin
Price’s Law is a rule of thumb, not a law, and the article treats it as considerably firmer than the bibliometrics support. Price’s original observation was about scientific publication, where it holds reasonably; the extensions to businesses, employees and Spotify streams are analogies presented as measurements, and the Milky Way luminosity example is decoration — stars are not agents making choices, and including it suggests a universality the evidence doesn’t have.
The article also never states its scope condition, which is the important omission. Price’s Law describes scalable domains — where one contributor’s output can be arbitrarily large. It does not describe surgery, plumbing, or teaching, where output is bounded by hours and bodies. Advice derived from it is actively wrong in those fields, and most people work in them.
And “publish 100 to find 10” quietly assumes the attempts are independent and equally likely to hit. They aren’t: attempt 80 is informed by the first 79, which is a better argument for volume than the lottery framing the piece actually uses.
